Texas makes its return to preseason training camp this Wednesday as the Longhorns are set to begin their official preparation for the 2022 college football season.

Second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff have added a lot of new faces to the 2022 roster this offseason in hopes of putting a far improved product on the field compared to his first year on the job.

The Longhorns signed the nation's No. 5 ranked recruiting class in Sarkisian's first complete recruiting cycle as Texas head coach, adding 35 players from the high school ranks and out of the transfer portal in the 2022 signing class.

Sarkisian and Co. will be relying on several 2022 signees this season — on both sides of the ball — and will need to get these guys ready to go come Sept. 3 when Texas opens the season at home against Louisiana-Monroe.

Before Texas kicks off the much-anticipated football season, Horns247 takes a complete look at all of the new additions on defense and the jersey numbers they will be wearing once the Longhorns kick off fall camp.

No. 1 Justice Finkley

Height/weight: 6-foot-2, 245 pounds (down 15 pounds since spring football)

High school: Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville

As a recruit: Four-star (0.9531 rating), No. 116 overall prospect, No. 12 Edge, No. 6 recruit in Alabama

247Sports high school scouting evaluation: "Brawny rocked up compact frame, Finkley has a thick lower half that can generate force. Powerful leverage rusher in a 3-4 scheme at the high school level. Also shifts down to play defensive tackle at times. Excellent crossing the face of offensive lineman and getting an inside rush. Good chase athleticism and lateral movement skills. Gets underneath opponents and can forklift with great leverage. Play strength and physicality upon contact standout with Finkley. Can move down to the interior shades on the defensive line at the next level depending on physical development." — 247Sports analyst Clint Brewster.

Previous school: James Madison (Senior transfer)

As a transfer: Three-star (0.8700 rating)

As a recruit: Two-star (0.7430 rating), No. 4,168 overall prospect, No. 206 inside linebacker, No. 92 recruit in Virginia

Height/weight: 6-foot, 196 pounds (down 14 pounds since spring football)

High school: Mission Hills (Calif.) Bishop Alemany

As a recruit: Four-star (0.9039 rating), No. 283 overall prospect, No. 24 safety, No. 24 recruit in California

247Sports high school scouting evaluation: "An athletic two-way player who could play safety or receiver in college but projects best as a safety. Plays a physical game with an edge in his game. Has good cover skills and ball awareness and is always around the football.

"Shows good football instincts and is tough in run support. Has a strong body and has filled out and added size in his upper body over the last year. He shows both short area quickness and has good long speed as well. He’s an excellent return man and should be able to return punts and kicks at the college level. Plays very hard with a consistent motor and has a strong will to win." — 247Sports National recruiting analyst Greg Biggins.

As a recruit: Four-star (0.9094 rating), No. 256 overall prospect, No. 21 safety, No. 41 recruit in Texas

247Sports scouting evaluation: "Possesses good size for a defensive back, whether playing corner or projecting to safety. Above average height with good length and an athletic build. Has predominantly played cornerback through his junior season, but could project better in the long run as a deep safety. Very good linear athlete with proven straight-line speed in a track environment. Ran a 10.98 100 as a freshman and an 11.04 100 as a junior. Also has posted several 200-meter times between 22.15 and 22.02, a PR from Spring 2021. Flashes the speed to run with wideouts on vertical shots. Length aids in ability to disrupt at the catch point.

"Long levers also a factor in stripping ability, which he flashed multiple times as a junior. Sometimes sacrifices tackling technique to go for the ball overzealously. Often arrives high as a tackler. Lateral fluidity and turn-and-locate skills can improve in man coverage. Will be dangerous as a back-end defender if horizontal ability catches up to forward-oriented play. Projects to the high-major level as a potentially position-versatile defensive back with terrific raw tools and straight-line speed that could foster a ceiling beyond college." — 247Sports Midlands region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks.

Height/weight: 6-foot-3, 206 pounds (down three pounds since spring football)

Previous school: Ohio State (Junior transfer)

As a transfer: Three-star (0.8900 rating), No. 112 overall transfer prospect

As a recruit: Four-star (0.9206 rating), No. 202 overall prospect, No. 18 safety, No. 31 recruit in Texas

247Sports high school scouting evaluation: "Huge cornerback prospect with elite frame relative to the position. Possesses outstanding height and length. Owns college-ready size, yet still plenty of space to add more bulk. Built like a basketball player. Flashes impressive turn-and-bail ability, especially relative to frame. Fairly light and nimble in his backpedal. Large wingspan aids in disrupting passing windows and catch point. Almost limitless ceiling as a jammer because of size/length/strength potential. Should present a tough customer in the red zone. Strong tester — verified 4.59 40, 4.20 shuttle, 38-inch vertical. Generally uses arm extension well. Not afraid to mix it up in press. Can improve strength, particularly to aid in run support and tackle power. Doesn’t always play to size as a tackler. More of a cutter than a hitter. Can improve ball skills. Needs to more consistently maximize high-pointing ability on contested throws. Just coming into his own, but possesses unusual tools for a high-major corner prospect. Definite Power Five starter with NFL Draft ceiling with proper development." — 247Sports Midlands region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks.

Height/weight: 6-foot, 205 pounds (up nine pounds since spring football)

As a recruit: Four-star (0.9505 rating), No. 125 overall prospect, No. 10 safety, No. 20 recruit in Texas

247Sports high school scouting evaluation: "Good frame with plus-4.5 length. Lean, athletic build with obvious space to add mass. Versatile defensive back who can stay on the field in all situations. Length aids in catch-point disruption in coverage and tackling consistency. Willing participant vs. the run with some pop when able to uncoil. Plays for state title-caliber Texas 5A program with ample experience in pressure situations. Strong tackling production as a sophomore. Solid junior production with perhaps increased stops vs. the pass. Plays aware and instinctive. Accelerates well in pursuit, when breaking on the ball, and in recovery speed. Does not give up the outside often. Takes good angles to the ball as a tackler. Quite natural when asked to play center field. Shows good play speed with a solid 11.27-second 100-meter time from sophomore year. Still has room to get faster at the top end with frame length to help reach that. Ball skills can improve. Competent over the top and covering the slot but honing man coverage technique will enhance game further. One of the top DB's in Texas and likely among the better safeties nationally in his class. Projects as a multi-year impact player at the Power Five level and potential early-round NFL Draft pick." — 247Sports Midlands region recruiting  analyst Gabe Brooks.

Height/weight: 5-foot-11, 198 pounds (up five pounds since spring football)

As a recruit: Four-star (0.9642 rating), No. 83 overall prospect, No. 10 cornerback, No. 14 recruit in Texas

247Sports high school scouting evaluation: "Owns the requisite height with a strong, athletic build. Elite length with an enormous wingspan in the plus-9 range relative to height. Strong football pedigree. Hyper-aware in coverage, whether manning up or playing zone. Consistently turns and locates the ball. Long levers disrupt routes and shrink catch windows. Shows above-average ball skills with functional athleticism to make something happen after an INT. Solid tackler who generates pop in close quarters with relatively little gather and uncoil. Twitchy start-stop athlete with impressive linear acceleration. Very good pursuit speed. Generally sticky in turn-and-run situations. Shows encouraging redirect ability for a long-levered, somewhat high-cut build. Ran track as a junior with 100-meter times of 11.25 and 11.29, plus a 23.27 200. Field speed is good, but track data suggests room to improve top-end explosiveness. One of the top defensive prospects in Texas for 2022 and among the better corners nationally in his class. Projects to the high-major level with the potential to become an all-conference performer with legitimate NFL Draft upside." — 247Sports Midlands region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks.

High school: Texarkana Texas High

As a recruit: Four-star (0.8986 rating), No. 335 overall prospect, No. 28 Edge, No. 46 recruit in Texas

247Sports scouting evaluation: "Requisite height with slightly plus length and plenty of space to add mass. Stand-up rush end or 3-4 outside linebacker frame, play style, and experience. Plays above his current weight thanks to disengaging ability. Above average functional athlete with good fluidity and bend off the edge. Flashes some back-side athleticism. Shows encouraging rush nuance with inside moves and counters. Gets his hands up and into passing lanes when unable to get home to the QB. Good production during junior season. Must add weight and strength, which will help with point-of-attack effectiveness vs. the run and tackling consistency. Lacks desired snap anticipation. Can improve explosiveness, particularly in tight quarters. Projects to the Power Five level with the potential to become a quality starter and a long-term ceiling that could lead him beyond college." — 247Sports Midlands region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks.

High school: Port Arthur Memorial

As a recruit: Four-star (0.9365 rating), No. 160 overall prospect, No. 20 cornerback, No. 24 recruit in Texas

247Sports high school scouting evaluation: "Good-sized corner with requisite height and a plus wingspan. Instinctive player who relies on natural coverage acumen and competitive field demeanor. Particularly good in red-zone situations. More than willing to use his hands at the line of scrimmage. Stays attached to receivers in the intermediate passing game. Does a good job crowding receivers to create a less-than-ideal catch window on downfield routes. Knows how to subtly lean into a receiver's route without drawing a flag. Competitive at the catch point, thanks in part to length, and challenges when the ball is in the air. Encouraging pad level when backpedaling.

"Two-sport athlete who has run the 200 (22.56) and 400 (51.08), in addition to relays. Improved tackler as a senior with conviction to help vs. the perimeter run game. Physical traits and football IQ suggest value as a position- and package-versatile defensive back. Keys to maximizing potential include raising the ceiling on top-end speed and playing with more fluidity and suddenness in the short area. Above average functional athlete but testing and track context suggest room to improve overall explosive athleticism.

"High-floor cornerback with likely competency at nickel and safety who brings immediate value to a Power Five defensive back unit. One of the more natural cover men in his class with upside that could lead beyond college, depending on continued athletic development." — 247Sports Midlands region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks.

As a recruit: Three-star (0.8752 rating), No. 651 overall prospect, No. 43 athlete, No. 97 recruit in Texas

High school: Ascension Catholic (La.)

As a recruit: Four-star (0.9551 rating), No. 107 overall prospect, No. 11 Edge, No. 9 recruit in Louisiana

247Sports scouting evaluation: "Adequate height with above average length. Stout build that still owns space for added mass. Play strength is obvious on tape. Displays disengaging ability thanks to phone booth power and sheer brute strength. Above average pursuit ability relative to size and role. Could potentially grow into an interior spot, but reach and two-point burst from the edge could put him in space for good as a hybrid defender. Quickness off the ball noticeably better from a two-point stance than three- or four-point. Varied athletic profile that includes two-way participation with snaps at tight end and the backfield.

"Plays basketball and throws the shot put, plus limited 200- and 400-meter opportunities. Will need to work on bending better and playing low to aid leverage. Naturally disruptive but can add technical nuance and hand violence at the point of attack. Better fluidity through the core will enhance redirecting ability and pass-rushing effectiveness, especially when aligned on the edge. Projects to the high-major level as a potential impact player who fits multiple spots in varying personnel looks. Long-term ceiling could lead to NFL Draft candidacy." — 247Sports Midlands region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks.

As a recruit: Three-star (0.8826 rating), No. 522 overall prospect, No. 50 linebacker, No. 74 recruit in Texas

Height/weight: 6-foot-4, 307 pounds (up 21 pounds since spring football)

High school: Southaven (Miss.) Southaven

As a recruit: Four-star (0.8926 rating), No. 391 overall prospect, No. 52 defensive lineman, No. 11 recruit in Mississippi

247Sports high school scouting evaluation: "Strengths: Bryant’s size and strength are on the high end, and he uses them to his advantage. Bryant shows the ability to occupy double teams and anchor against the run. He shows violent hands at the point of attack and shows the ability to shed offensive linemen blocking him. Bryant plays with a strong motor and shows strong ability as a pass rusher. Bryant uses his length well to hold off blockers and wrap up ball carriers to bring them down. His frame is probably close to college-ready which could help him reach the field quickly.

"Areas for improvement: Bryant hasn’t performed in any events outside of his football season, so there are some questions regarding how athletic he may be. A lack of metrics and context muddies the waters when it comes to gauging how high his ceiling of development might be. Bryant will need to watch his weight as he moves into college to make sure he maintains good weight." — Horns247 recruiting analyst Mike Roach.

High school: Williams Field (Gilbert, Ariz.)

As a recruit: Two-star (0.7911 rating), No. 1 longsnapper, No. 42 recruit in Arizona

High school: Brophy College Prep (Phoenix)

As a recruit: Four-star (0.8944 rating), No. 374 overall prospect, No. 48 defensive lineman, No. 6 recruit in Arizona

247Sports scouting evaluation: "Well-proportioned frame with decent length and growth potential. Carries weight well and could continue to add bulk. Strong lower half. Aggressive lineman who gets good push at the snap. Shows ability to extend arms upon contact to generate momentum into backfield.

"Maintains good pad level as he fights through gaps. Flashes nice array of pass-rush moves and knack for shedding blocks. Displays forceful punch and wraps up on tackles, showing awareness in run support. Explodes out of his stance and gets would-be blockers on their heels fast. Could continue to improve gap integrity and refine the routes he takes to the football. Potential multi-year starter at elite Power Five level with chance to garner serious NFL Draft attention." — 247Sports Mountain region recruiting analyst Blair Angulo.

As a recruit: Four-star (0.8938 rating), No. 379 overall prospect, No. 30 Edge, No. 51 recruit in Texas

Height/weight: 6-foot-4, 261 pounds (down 10 pounds since spring football)

As a recruit: Four-star (0.9307 rating), No. 174 overall prospect, No. 24 defensive lineman, No. 28 recruit in Texas

247Sports high school scouting evaluation: "No verified size, but looks and plays big on tape. Stout, burly build that still contains space for additional bulk. Flashes impressive lateral quickness and range, especially for his size and role. Redirects with relative ease and does not lose much steam. Good linear pursuit speed to close on the ball with conviction. Physical player with general suddenness and violence to his game.

"Extensive experience on both sides of the ball with outstanding production during junior season (100-plus tackles, 1,000-plus rushing yards). Multi-sport athlete who throws the shot put (49-7 PR as a junior). Regularly disengages to make plays but will need to work on hand technique and move set to continue his playmaking ways against high-major competition. Tackling technique and pad level consistency can improve. Will face a significant jump in competition going from small-school ball in rural Central Texas to the Power Five level. A natural talent with functional athleticism well beyond his size. Likely fits multiple roles and schemes. Projects to the high-major level with the potential to become an impact starter who possesses a ceiling beyond college." — 247Sports Midlands region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks.

As a recruit: Four-star (0.9103 rating), No. 250 overall prospect, No. 33 defensive lineman, No. 39 recruit in Texas
