HOLLAND — The Holland Aquatic Center was evacuated Monday afternoon following the release of chlorine fumes in the pool building.

The Holland Department of Public Safety responded to a “small and contained” chemical spill at about noon Monday, Aug. 1.

In a news release Monday afternoon, HDPS Fire Services said a small amount of liquid chlorine was vaporized as it was being delivered to the building and offloaded into a bulk container in the chemical room.

A member of the Holland Aquatic Center staff noticed a strong smell of chlorine, immediately halted the offloading process and initiated the evacuation of the building, according to HAC executive director Jack Huisingh.

The fire department said it was aware of three pool patrons who were experiencing "some minor respiratory irritation" and sought medical treatment at next-door Holland Hospital.

The fire department ventilated the building and patrons were able to return inside to retrieve belongings.

Huisingh said staff were sent home for the day following the incident and the building would reopen to patrons Tuesday. He said it was possible the community pool would have to remain closed Tuesday.

"Our staff did a fantastic job at following procedures and getting everyone out quickly and safely," Huisingh said. "Everything is now fine in the building."

The fire department said patrons of the aquatic center that are experiencing irritation to the eyes, respiratory tract or skin should seek medical attention. More severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing are considered an emergency and they should contact 911.
